an action that happened in the past, but at the same time has a connection with the present.

A simple present tense denoting action in the broadest sense of the word.

It is used when there are two actions in the past and it is important to show that one of them happened before the other.

Where does John live and where did he meet his wife?

He lives in London and has no wife.

He lives in Los Angeles and met his wife there.

He lives in London and met his wife there.

How long have you been working at school?

I am very tired. I have been working since morning.
